How To Teach Sit
Teaching your dog to sit is one of the quickest and easiest commands to master as it is such a natural behaviour. This will then become a stepping stone for/to further training.
Step 1: Gain your dog's attention by presenting them a treat. If they do not focus straight away, don’t panic! Just simply allow them to smell the treat without having access to it as this will focus and improve concentration.
Step 2: As your dog stands and waits for the reward, hold the treat between your middle index finger and thumb. Hold the treat in front of your dog and slowly move it over the head towards the tail. This will naturally encourage the dog into a seated position as it looks up for the treat. Once the dog has got the hang of placing its bottom on the floor for a treat, introduce the “sit” command. In order for the correct association to be made, you must say “sit” AND give a treat to moment their bottom hits the floor.
The more this is practiced the easier it will become. Each time the hand gesture should become less obvious as the dog will begin to associate the word with a reward. Eventually your dog will learn to sit on command.
