Timing with Training

Timing Is Everything

If you want your dog to succeed, timing is everything. Reward associations need to be made within the first couple of seconds after the desired action has been expressed. This ensures that the dog understands exactly what he/she is being rewarded for and wants to continue that behaviour.

This is also the case for negative behaviour. For example, if you have come home to find your favourite pair of shoes are ruined, shouting at your dog is not the answer. Your dog will not understand what it has done wrong, therefore will not understand that destroying shoes is bad. In fact, he/she might even begin to associate you coming home with negative emotions and not want to greet you.
